Member of the Hawaiian nobility. In 1874, her brother David Kalākaua was elected King, giving his siblings royal titles; Lili'uokalani became crown princess in 1877 and folloed her brother in 1891 to the throne. In 1893 she was deposed by a coup American and European settlers and sentenced in 1895 to life-long house arrest after an alleged coup attempt. During this time she composed numerous songs to preserve the Hawaiian culture. She was known as an accomplished ukulele player. When she finally officially renounced the throne, she was pardoned and released in 1896.

Her songs have been published several times. Best known is Aloha 'Oe.
