Simon Jeffes

19.2.1949–10.12.1997

The Briton Simon Jeffes grew up in Canada and studied classical guitar in London. However, he soon became interested in pop music and non-European ethno music, which he met in 1972 on a trip to Japan. He then founded the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, where he also performed as an outstanding ukulele and cuatro player. He also worked as a composer and music producer. He used minimalist and repetitive patterns and motifs from ethno music. Especially well known was Paul's Dance . This style is continued today by his son Arthur Jeffes as Penguin Cafe.
