LEXIS

Hammer-on is a technique to play legato on a stringed instrument. One string is plucked with one finger to create a sound, whereupon another finger is forcefully put („hammered“) onto a higher fret of the same string, resulting in a second sound which resonates immediately after the first. Thus, a seamless transition from a lower to a higher note can be created. (For the contrary, see pull-off.)

Example: A-Bb-C

Legato (with hammer-on)
Staccato (without hammer-on)
