The name is an abbreviation of Brothers Kollitz. Franz and Josef Kollitz continued the business founded in 1890 by their father, the violin maker Alois Kollitz, and in the 1930s began to build banjos and ukuleles. After 1945 the family business moved from Rothau in the Sudetenland to Erlangen. Since 1995 it has been in the hands of Hubert Pfeiffer, who is married to a great-granddaughter of Alois.
