On the Ukulele, pentatonic scales can be played as moveable patterns; thus, identical fingering sets are repeated all over the fretboard.

For a major pentatonic scale, steps 4 and 7 of the major scale are omitted. For a minor scale, steps 3 and 6 are missing.

In Japanese folk und pop music, Yonanuki scales are common; they do not contain the 4th and 7th step of the corresponding major and minor scales. The major Yonanuki scale is thus identical with the major pentatonic scale.
