A note divided into three smaller notes, which are played in the same period as the undivided note. In notation, a square bracket connects the three smaller notes over or under which the number „3“ is written.

In triplets, lack of exactitude often arises from the uncertainty of whether the triplets should be played as exact triplets or as approximated triplets in 3-3-2 subdivision - which in practice depends on the rest of the music and is determined by the orchestra leader.1)
