Okoumé is the European trade name of the tree species Aucoumea klaineana, mainly native in Gabon. The tree grows quickly and without systematic planting. It is often used as plywood. The wood is light, easy to peel and not very durable. Under light it darkens from reddish-brown to mahogany brown (hence also called Gabon mahogany). Its sound is likened to maple. In instruments, okoumé is mainly used for sides.
