Jesse Kalima

1920–1980

Born in Honolulu, Jesse Kalima learned to sing from his mother and play the ukulele as a child. At the age of 15 he first appeared as a soloist. He was one of the first to play a tenor ukulele with linear tuning. He is also credited with introducing chord-melody to the ukulele. In 1938 he founded the Kalima Brothers Band. Their arrangement of Stars and Stripes Forever gained much fame.
