Ko'olau Guitar & 'Ukulele belongs to the renowned 4K companies of Hawaii. The company was founded by John Kitakis, who came to Hawaii as a furniture maker but later worked as a luthier on the mainland before retiring to Hawaii, supported by his stepson Noa Bonk. In addition to standard instruments, Ko'olau produces many custom instruments.

Ten years later, John began building the brand Pono whose instruments are cheaper because they are manufactured in Indonesia.
