Founded in 1948 as Mitsuba Kōgei 三つ葉工芸 for the manufacture of furniture, the company has also since 1955 been producing ukulele as a supplier for Kiwaya and others. In 1964 it was renamed Mitsuba Gakki 三つ葉楽器 ( gakki = instruments), but continues to make furniture and wooden toys. Since 1999, own ukuleles have been distributed under the brand Zephyr. In 2014, the company established a branch in Honolulu (Hawaii), where since 2016 ukuleles are manufactured and marketed under the brand GCEA ukulele.
