Vibrato designates an intentionally induced variation in the frequency of the played tones perceived by the listener as „vibration“ of the pitch (see also beat). Thus, vibrato is a kind of embellishment. In the ukulele, vibrato is created as finger vibrato, that is, the plucked string is moved longitudinally (axially) or up or down (radially) with the picking finger. For axial vibrato, slides are used, for radial vibrato, bends.
