„The Ukulele, a kind of guitar, is a Portuguese instrument and was called
Machete. Portuguese immigrants brought the instrument to Madeira, the Azores and the Sandwich Islands. The natives called it Ukulele, meaning jumping flea, and this curious name was picked up by the American inhabitants and Europeans, and it was as Ukulele that this little instrument found popularity with first the Americans and then the British, whereas as Machete, it had been a purely national folk instrument of the Portuguese.“
